"Hairdressers Against Aids" celebrates its 10th anniverary

"Hairdressers against AIDS", the emblematic programme initiated by the L’Oréal Professional Products Division in collaboration with UNESCO and the L’Oréal Foundation, celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2011.

A new campaign in 2011

A decade after its creation, it still has the same objective: make hairdressers active players in AIDS prevention. On 1 December 2011, for World AIDS Day, a new educational kit was launched under UNESCO's supervision: four new videos dealing with AIDS prevention through four different themes, an educational quiz and an online contest. This 10th anniversary also gave rise to local actions all over the world. Hairdressers against AIDS has already mobilised 1.5 million hairdressers in 35 countries to date.

Strong social ties

With these interactive tools, Hairdressers against AIDS supports hairdressing professionals in their missions which are to raise the general public's awareness of HIV risks and to combat negative and stigmatising behaviour associated with the disease. This programme keeps them informed by integrating educational sequences on AIDS prevention into their advanced "business" courses. Once trained, the hairdressers in turn play an essential role in awareness-raising and education. Hairdressers make up a large community in which their strong social ties with customers and their communication skills are effective means for relaying this type of information.
